Terryburg’s Tales of Things You Might Not Know

Things you might not know about Pacific Northwest PHP

Things you might not know about Pacific Northwest PHP

Had the pleasure of attending the inaugural PNWPHP conference in Seattle last week (9/10-12, 2015).

Here are some things I discovered:
– Long drive to Seattle
– Bums? Boy does Seattle have them, esp. in downtown Pioneer Square area where this was held
– Most friendly and polite citizenry you ever encountered
– Great bus system
– Steep hills

Now then, as to the conference itself: Great job. Well organized, well run, great speakers who were also well organized, and great food. Kudos to the PHP groups from the various Pac NW cities who put this on. And thanks to all sponsors.

You can find links to slides for many here at the individual joind.in pages, and I’ve linked some below for my own future reference. Ones I really took a lot home from were:

Git and Github for PHP programmers, Beau Simensen

Code Review for Security, Anthony Ferrara

Cloud is the New Normal, Jeff Barr

PHPSpec & Behat: Two Testing Tools That Write Code For You, Joshua Warren

Refactoring 101, Adam Culp

Building Extraordinary Packages, Phil Sturgeon (every bit as entertaining in person as on Twitter)

Navigating Your Git Repository, Gemma Anible

And a special mention for Margaret Staples’ “How I Used Symfony to Create an MMORPG” as my personal most entertaining and enjoyable talk of the conference. You never saw so much energy in all your life.

Thanks again to the organizers and thanks to all the speakers.
